
The Horizon Europe-backed initiative will connect materials data, digital tools and workflows through a single access point, supporting faster development, AI-enabled research and traceable product information.
Connecting fragmented materials data
MaterialsCommons has launched with the aim of creating a unified digital infrastructure for advanced materials research and engineering across Europe.
The project will connect existing platforms and initiatives including Materials Cloud, NOMAD, MaterialDigital and OPTIMADE. It is intended to address the fragmentation of materials data across different repositories, formats and publications, which currently limits its reuse and restricts AI-driven innovation.
Integrating digital workflows
Development will focus on shared taxonomies, metadata standards and ontologies, alongside simpler access to materials science data. MaterialsCommons will also connect experimental, simulation and AI workflows to support more automated and interoperable materials development.

Supporting industry adoption
Industrial partners will help ensure that the resulting tools and data services respond to practical requirements and can be adopted quickly. The infrastructure will also support Digital Product Passports through interoperable and traceable data across value chains.
The consortium comprises 26 academic partners, 21 associated partners and 12 associated collaborators, coordinated by Fraunhofer-Institut für Werkstoffmechanik in Germany.
