In an era where the construction sector must evolve rapidly to meet economic, environmental and societal demands, Andy Barnes, Director of Civil at the Manufacturing Technology Centre, offers a compelling vision for collaborative innovation.

Drawing from the MTC’s wide-ranging industrial network, Barnes highlights the critical importance of cross-sector learning – translating technological advances from adjacent industries into construction, and particularly civil engineering.

With a keen understanding of the sector’s complexity, he emphasises the need for integrated digital ecosystems and the development of AI-enabled tools that can drive efficiency, unlock new design potential, and support the shift toward industrialised methods of delivery.

Barnes also outlines how the MTC is helping forge dynamic public-private partnerships to reshape the funding and operational models of infrastructure delivery. By acting as a convenor, the MTC is enabling transformative change at scale – fostering the conditions necessary for innovation to thrive across the built environment.

As Managing Director at Civil within the MTC framework, how are you fostering collaborative innovation across the construction spectrum? 

 

MTC operates across an incredibly broad spectrum of sectors. Because of this diversity, we consider how innovations that have worked for one industrial sector can be developed for applications in others. Our vast network of collaborative partners enables us to convene a variety of stakeholders to help define innovation and transformation programmes.

Construction is a complex industrial sector with clients, regulatory and standards bodies, tier 1 contractors and a huge supply chain and trades-based workforce. So, being able to facilitate collaboration is crucial to foster innovation in this domain.

It is worth highlighting too, that MTC and the wider Catapult network have an amazing array of leading technology groups and competencies, which can be drawn upon to de-risk the journey for adoption of innovative solutions and approaches.

 

What role do you see for emerging industrial technologies in reshaping civil engineering practices at major project sites?

 

The construction and infrastructure sectors already have a wide range of digital competencies and a lot of software available for modelling, simulation and analyses. However, these toolsets are not always able to share data or specifications, making it difficult to have a single source of the truth.

Very few industrial sectors have managed to achieve this “golden thread” approach. A common challenge is developing solutions that offer a unified source to facilitate specification development, modelling and simulation. AI technologies such as generative design and algorithm-based digital robots are being developed which will forge a path for finding solutions.

Such approaches are transforming project design and development timescales, driving more innovative and materials-efficient solutions, and underpinning the move towards industrialised construction. A lot of this is about how we “port-over” best practice, learning from other industrial sectors and applying these to the materials and product groups used in construction and infrastructure delivery.

 

How is the MTC creating an ecosystem that encourages public-private partnerships to advance industrialised construction?

 

This is a great question. If we consider the current market economics, the total pipeline of activity planned is approximately 54% privately funded, 38% publicly funded, and the balance a public-private mix. So this is already happening. The drivers of this change include a number of aspects, such as the migration towards manufacturing-led construction.

We foresee higher levels of private investment for developing and delivering pre-manufactured construction products, as well as the factories and capital equipment to produce them. This will drive a greater proportion of the value-add into an expanding supply chain, with strategic partnerships being formed between larger tier 1 construction organisations and their suppliers to facilitate this – a model used in other industrial sectors.

Public funding will still be necessary for social infrastructure and other national networks such as transport and energy distribution, etc. This means the blend between publicly-driven delivery programmes and privately-developed solutions is a likely future operating model within construction.

As noted previously, MTC’s expansive partnerships, coupled with our ability to convene, means the formation of these ecosystems is a bi-product of our manner of engagement and enablement.
