Cambridge South Station has officially opened, marking a major milestone in the delivery of a contemporary transport hub designed with sustainability and passenger experience at its core.
The opening ceremony took place on 28 June, attended by Jan Kroes, Director and lead for Cambridge South Station at Fereday Pollard & Partners (FP&P), alongside other members of the project team. The event marked the culmination of several years of collaboration and development.
FP&P has led the station’s design since 2018, working closely with Network Rail, Greater Anglia, Arcadis and contractor Murphy to create a new transport hub that prioritises both people and place.
Integrated with the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the surrounding Green Belt and the wider city, the station has been designed to deliver a high-quality passenger experience while encouraging walking and cycling and enhancing connections with the natural environment.
Key features include a sculptural green roof constructed using low-carbon materials such as timber and sedum, alongside wildflowers, rainwater storage systems and solar panels. Extensive planting has also been carried out to support environmental net gain objectives and create an attractive setting for both local residents and rail users.
The project showcases a human-centred and accessible approach to transport infrastructure design, demonstrating how thoughtful planning can support communities, improve connectivity and place the natural environment at the heart of development.
